Global Urban Nomads leads collaborative partnerships with Central San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce for Level Up SD High School Student Workforce Readiness and Internship Program

The grant supports students participating in the Level Up SD summer enrichment program, funded by San Diego Unified School District.

SAN DIEGO (June 8, 2022) – Global Urban Nomads announced today that it has partnered with the Central San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce and was awarded an $85K grant from The San Diego Foundation. The San Diego Foundation inspires enduring philanthropy and enables community solutions to improve the quality of life in our region. Global Urban Nomads will lead a collaborative effort to deliver a summer High School Student Workforce Readiness and Internship Program; Your Career is Your Artistry - How to Create your Own Future & Build Generational Wealth. This unique program is aligned with San Diego Gas and Electric’s Labor workforce readiness and internship program. (Read more...)

“I am committed to elevating Black businesses through tangible opportunities that result in economic viability for San Diego's Black communities.” said Bruce Mayberry, Chairman of the Central San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce board, “Our vision to create generational wealth through business enterprise, education, employment, and investing is a community effort. Uplifting and elevating each other is vital to achieving our mission, and I am proud to be partnering with Global Urban Nomads on Level Up SD.”

California has created the largest and highest-quality Expanded Learning infrastructure in the nation, however there is still significant unmet need for After School and Summer Learning programs. Over 2,500 low-income schools in CA do not benefit from a publicly funded Expanded Learning program. Global Urban Nomads strives to help fill this gap for some of our most underserved communities. As an excellent model of a private-public partnership, our collaborators include:

Together, this summer enrichment program benefits San Diego Unified School District high school students and will prepare them as future leaders by developing decision making skills, financial literacy, entrepreneurship mindset, and career planning. With a focus on building generational wealth, the students will earn $500 for participation and an additional $100 to start a savings account. This program supports academic and socio-emotional development opportunities through a summer session of Level Up SD, in partnership with San Diego Unified School District.

“San Diego Unified students will once again have free access to meaningful summer enrichment opportunities because every child deserves a summer of learning and joy,” said Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne, president of the San Diego Unified Board of Education.

Level Up SD was created last year by the San Diego Unified School District and The San Diego Foundation, thanks to a $31 million commitment by the San Diego Unified Board of Education. This program was made possible thanks to grant support from The San Diego Foundation. Funding for this grant was provided from the San Diego Unified Expanded Learning Opportunities Grant to The Foundation.
